Carpel tunnel syndrome is the second name of median nerve compression. It occurs when the median nerve is confined. The median nerve runs through the passage of the wrist also said as carpal tunnel and terminates in the hand. The swelling also occurs in the flexor tendons surrounding the median nerve. It causes weakness in the hand along with numbness and tingling. Still, the exact cause is not found, but it can happen due to repetitive motions of the wrist. Several diseases like hyperthyroidism and obesity can be the risk factors for it. There is a test which doctors usually do to diagnose carpal tunnel, and that is the Tinel sign.
What are the sign and symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome?
Following are the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome:
- Pain occurs predominantly in the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers.
- Weakness in the hand along with numbness, and tingling. The patient drops the things due to weakness and loss of proprioception.
- Upward traveling of pain as well as numbness toward the shoulder.
- Difficulty in executing the fine movements .i.e. closing the shirt's button.
- An infrequent sensation of shock and that scatter toward the thumb, index, middle, and ring finger.
What are the causes of carpal tunnel syndrome?
The cause isn't single, it is a combination of multiple factors. Some of them are:
Repetitive movement: The prolonged repetition of the same movement of wrist and hand over a long time span can provoke the tendons of the wrist that cause swelling. The swelling pressurizes the nerve and develops carpal tunnel syndrome.
Genetics: The genes of the carpal tunnel also run in the family.
Pregnancy: During pregnancy, there occur some hormonal changes and that can cause swelling around the median nerve.
Placement of hand and wrist: Utmost flexion and extension of the hand and wrist over a lengthened period of time might pressurize the nerve. So doing these activities for a longer period leads to carpal tunnel syndrome.
Other conditions: Several conditions are associated with carpal tunnel syndrome and that include diabetes, hyperthyroidism, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis.
